APTech's Key Staff

William Mackie Ph.D. ~ President & Co-founder

Bill received his Ph.D. from OGI (Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology, now a division of Oregon Health and Sciences University) in Applied Physics in 1987. He joined the faculty at Linfield College, his undergraduate alma mater, and conducted research on transition metal carbides at Linfield Research Institute. He has a lengthy list of publications in the areas of transition metal carbides, field emission cathodes, thermionic sources, and thin film uses of refractory materials. Along with his full-time duties at Applied Physics Technologies, he is also professor of physics at Linfield College and a former director of the Linfield Research Institute. Gerald (Bud) Magera Ph.D. ~ V.P. of Research & Development

Bud received his Ph.D. from OGI (Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology, now a division of Oregon Health and Sciences University) in Electrical Engineering in 1993 after attending Linfield College as an undergraduate. The following 13 years were spent at the FEI Company as a Research Scientist in the Beam Technology Division. Bud joined APTech in 2006. Areas of expertise include electron and ion source development, charged particle optics, high voltage systems, vacuum technology, and surface physics and chemistry related to electron and ion emission. Bud has been granted five electron source patents.

Alana R. Celia ~ V.P. of Business Operations

Alana is a graduate of Linfield College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Business Management. Previously she worked at ChemPoint.com in their Operations and Marketing & Sales department. Alana has over six years experience with thermionic and field emission. Alana also has a strong background in business related topics; she completed a marketing and management internship that focused on creating business Internet platforms for products, participated in a molecular physics internship at SRI International, and spent a summer analyzing biotechnology clusters at Keck Graduate Institute. Alana began her adventures at APTech in 2008 and started as the Marketing & Sales Manager. After creating APTech's Marketing Department, she was promoted to the Director of Marketing & Business Development. Alana now supervises APTech's Operations & Business Departments which include overseeing APTech's financials, production, accounting, marketing, sales, human resources, and business development.

Lauren Loepp ~ Director of Business Operations

Lauren graduated from Linfield College in 2010 earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Lauren completed her research in Developmental Psychology culminating in a presentation at the Western Psychology Association conference in Spring 2010. After a year long internship focusing on clinical psychology, Lauren determined her passion lay elsewhere in organizational psychology (business and psychology). Lauren began work at APTech right out of college as an intern in an effort to gain business experience. As the need in the company grew, the position of Director of Business Operations became available. Lauren works with our Management Team with short and long term planning, company branding, organizational development, business plan writing, and manages the majority of our international distributors.

Paul Davis ~ Senior Research Consultant

Paul received his Ph.D. in Physics from Washington State University in 1972, with emphasis on surface physics. After a postdoctoral year at the Fritz-Haber-Institut of the Max Planck Gesellschaft in Berlin, he spent two years at the University of Bristol in the UK and three years at NASA-Ames Research Center in California. Paul has been involved in several areas of research, including surface physics and chemistry, electron emission phenomena, surface analytical techniques, low work function materials, and energy conversion technologies. He settled at the Oregon Graduate Institute (now part of Oregon Health and Sciences University) in 1978. In 1991, he moved to Linfield College, his undergraduate alma mater, where he continued research and teaching. Paul retired from Linfield in 2005 with the rank of Professor Emeritus of Physics. He is a former director of the Linfield Research Institute. Paul presently serves as a consultant to Applied Physics Technologies on matters pertaining to thermionic and field emission cathodes and applications.
